Artificial Intelligence (AI) is globally transforming the work of healthcare providers and how we approach the health of our citizens and care for our patients. The pace of this change is accelerating. AI presents significant opportunities to promote population health and alleviate the increasing pressure on the Dutch healthcare system.
The application of AI in healthcare is broad. AI models can bring about a shift from a reactive to a proactive healthcare system (prevention). They can lead to faster and better diagnoses and optimize treatments for individual patients. AI can also provide insights that support better self-management for chronic patients. On a national or even international scale, AI can be used to gain faster insights into and respond to epidemics. These are just a few examples. With multiple applications, AI can also contribute to providing the right care at the right place (at the right time).
Netherlands has always been at the forefront of healthcare digitalization and the required infrastructure. Globally, we see significant investments being made in AI. This is the moment to scale up valuable Dutch AI applications together and establish the necessary structural data infrastructure and other prerequisites (such as finance and knowledge). We can also create an environment to accelerate the implementation of innovations in AI in the health and care sector collaboratively.
