<p>At the heart of the project is the so-called ELSA Lab (Ethical, Legal, and Societal Impact Analysis – AI FOR ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY (AI4ES)). This is not a physical laboratory, but an environment where researchers and stakeholders regularly come together to discuss current issues surrounding AI and energy. Real-world cases are analyzed from ethical, legal, and societal perspectives and translated into new insights, tools, and best practices.</p><h1>A Sandbox for Complex Questions</h1><p>The lab serves as a kind of sandbox for complex issues, such as those related to regulation, governance, and the societal impact of AI applications in the digitization of (decentralized) energy grids. By combining knowledge from various disciplines, a framework for the responsible use of AI in managing and optimizing energy systems and policy is being developed step by step.</p><p>“At and around the Electricity Campus, we link AI technology directly to real-world energy challenges. This is how we’re accelerating the energy transition—safely, fairly, and economically.” Chris Willemsen, program manager at the AI Hub East Netherlands.</p><h1>Powerful Consortium</h1><p>The consortium consists of researchers from the University of Twente and JADS (Jheronimus Academy of Data Science), along with partners such as KPN, Enexis, Eurofiber, and AI-hub Oost-Nederland. In addition, various organizations are contributing as co-funders or supporters, including Coolgradient, Endona Energy Cooperative, Elferink &amp; Kortier Advocaten, &amp;Flux, FME, NLdigital, Electricity Campus, Brainport Development, and Stadtwerke Gronau GmbH.</p><p>Within the initiative, Oost NL, AI-hub Oost-Nederland, the Electricity Campus, and Connectr – Energy Innovation are collaborating as project partners and co-funders. The Electricity Campus serves as the host for the Shared Lab Facilities event, which connects AI leaders from the network to the lab.</p><p>This collaboration aligns with the Eastern Netherlands’ strong position in the fields of electrification and energy innovation. At the same time, the importance of AI is growing rapidly, both in optimizing energy grids and in developing new smart energy services and economic applications. By combining technological innovation with ethical, legal, and social insights, AI4ES aims to contribute to an energy system that is not only smarter but also responsible and socially supported.</p><p>Would you like to learn more about this new ELSA lab?
