<p>It is a common complaint that today’s education system no longer aligns well with what society demands of us in many areas. Although more and more educational tools are already being offered digitally, it’s clear that there is much more potential in this area. And why aren’t schoolchildren and college students already being offered standard curricula that enhance their digital skills?</p><h1>The Impact of AI on Education</h1><p>All signs point to the education sector being on the cusp of a digital transformation. AI could well serve as a welcome catalyst in this process. However, it is a technology that must be handled with care—especially within the education sector.</p><p>Among other things, AI enables:</p><ul><li data-list-item-id="ebbf8b8b27dbaf877b923f9043105a7ba">personalized learning (tailored to the student’s level and pace);</li><li data-list-item-id="e1846074c3fbc9e74ba8b9bec1d6d3ef3">smarter use of adaptive learning tools;</li><li data-list-item-id="e5d3090da6bac507e652f84c1f5d079aa">support for teachers in guiding and assessing students;</li><li data-list-item-id="ebb4aad68ded932e9b7540da93147cfe8">more efficient educational logistics and planning;</li><li data-list-item-id="e10fd8e177b96b6a1158bba335f3159b2">a better alignment between education and the job market.</li></ul><p>In addition, AI is changing the role of teachers and educational institutions, and it requires new skills from students. To capitalize on these opportunities, collaboration is essential—through co-creation among educational institutions, businesses, the government, and society.</p>

AI is accelerating innovation in education

<p>In East Netherlands, active efforts are underway to utilize AI to improve the quality of education and develop future-proof learning systems.</p><p>A key initiative in the eastern Netherlands is NOLAI, the National Education Lab for AI. This lab focuses on improving the quality of elementary, secondary, and special education through the use of AI.</p><h2>NOLAI - National Education AI Lab</h2><p>Within NOLAI, teachers, school leaders, school administrators, teacher educators, researchers, and companies collaborate closely on the development and application of smart technology in educational practice. NOLAI is part of Radboud University and is based within the Faculty of Social Sciences.</p><p>Educational practice is central to our work. Questions from teachers and schools always serve as the starting point for new projects. Together, we explore whether and how AI can contribute to a solution. When opportunities arise, partners from academia and the business community are brought in to jointly develop and test applications. The focus is not on the technology itself, but on the needs of teachers and students.</p><p>Within NOLAI, concrete projects are developed and tested that contribute to:</p><ul><li data-list-item-id="e387d14b9d38a821b6948d392d1a294e4">Improving the quality of education</li><li data-list-item-id="e488aab4e1ad800b7ce8cfda39c4549b8">Responsible use of AI in the classroom</li><li data-list-item-id="ebf5a815bea933afde4e4338b1330f7cd">Practical applications for schools</li><li data-list-item-id="e4c123b3d847126acaf9264609a094c1c">Collaboration and impact</li></ul><h3><strong>Collaboration as a driver of innovation</strong></h3><p>NOLAI’s strength lies in co-creation. Education, research, and the business community work closely together within a single ecosystem, enabling innovations to emerge more quickly and be put into actual practice.</p><p>NOLAI connects:</p><ul><li data-list-item-id="e105c039e2dc8966f510eae362fb37287">Educational institutions (practical application and implementation)</li><li data-list-item-id="e7678d4919b0054c794dcefaacf6f4487">Scientists (research and validation)</li><li data-list-item-id="efa80f9d61021631f27e0e8a97bdcb38c">EdTech companies (development and scaling up)</li></ul>
